Free Spins and Multipliers: Anatomy of a Bonus Round

In most modern slots the bonus round holds a large share of the game's total return. Understanding how it triggers and builds explains most of the game.

The trigger

Free spins usually start when enough special symbols, often called scatters, land in one spin. Unlike ordinary symbols, scatters generally count wherever they appear. The rules state how many are needed and how many free spins they award.

What is different inside the round

A free spin is not simply a spin you did not pay for. Most games change the rules during the round:

Three multiplier designs

  1. Fixed. Every win in the round is multiplied by the same number.
  2. Progressive. The multiplier rises after each win or each cascade and applies to what follows.
  3. Accumulating. Multiplier symbols land on the grid and their values are added together, then applied to the total. This design produces the widest swings.

Why the round matters so much

Because the bonus round is rare and can pay many times the bet, it concentrates the game's volatility. The base game can feel thin precisely because so much of the return is reserved for the feature. See volatility and hit frequency.

Reading a real example

The clearest way to understand a particular feature is a record of someone actually playing through it. One detailed write-up, in Traditional Chinese, is this hands-on test of the free-game trigger and multiplier accumulation in RSG's Thor's Hammer, written for players at Fuyou (富遊娛樂城 RSG 雷神之鎚).

Buying the feature

Some games let you pay a set price to enter the bonus round directly. The price is calibrated so that the expected return stays about the same. What changes is speed: you reach the high-variance part of the game immediately, and the budget moves much faster.
